Scratch Version 1.2 — Let’s Talk Exports

Another new version of your favorite quick-input notepad with some awesome new features:

Tons of New Export Options
Email HTML, Copy, support for apps like Things, Day One, OmniFocus, Tweetbot and more! Plus we’re adding more all the time and they’ll automatically show up in Scratch without needing to upgrade the app. Missing your favorite app? Let us know and we’ll add it.

Manage Your Export Menu
You can choose which export options to show when you tap the export button to completely streamline your experience. Don’t want Copy HTML? Move it to inactive. Boom, done.

Markdown Auto-Linking
If you have a URL on your clipboard, the Markdown link button will automatically use it.

TextExpander Support when Naming New Files in Dropbox
Use your TextExpander Touch snippets to rapidly name documents.

And, of course, plenty of little fixes to make Scratch even sharper:

  • Fix for bug affecting input via Japanese and other non-Roman character keyboards
  • Better word counts for non-English languages
  • Minor fixes for upcoming iOS version

Scratch users are the best—thank you very much for your support. We’ve loved all the feedback so far, please keep sending it our way! And, of course, rating and reviewing is always helpful.

Scratch Version 1.1 — Tons of New Features!

We’ve been hard at work since the initial release of Scratch a few weeks back, adding lots of new features and fixing bugs as well. Version 1.1 addresses the most popular feedback we’ve received and streamlines the Dropbox export/append workflow even further (making it crazy-fast to append to recent files, create new files with auto-naming and more) and adds support for Open In…, Launch Center Pro and TextExpander.

This update is available today, jam-packed with new stuff:

“Open In…” action in Export menu
Open your notes in any iOS application that supports it! Pages, Evernote and all the rest.

Recent Dropbox files and folders
Now your most recently used folders and files are only one tap away. It’s easier than ever to export data to Dropbox!

TextExpander support
Boom. Go crazy with your snippets.

URL Scheme support
Use Scratch in Launchpad or anywhere else you’d like that supports URL schemes. (scratch:// to launch, scratch://new for a new note or scratch://new?text=anything for a pre-populated note.)

Preference to auto-name new Dropbox files
Let Scratch automatically name new Dropbox files so you don’t have to. Lightning-fast exporting!

Default new file name is now timestamp-based
Rather than using “Untitled” and forcing you to choose a name every time you create a new file on Dropbox, Scratch will default to a timestamp-based name for easy sorting.

And plenty of little fixes to make Scratch even sharper:

  • Fixed a potential crash when editing crazy-large files.
  • Fixed a visual bug when choosing folks from the address book when exporting via Message or Mail.
  • Fixed a few bugs where the entire note would export instead of a selection.
  • Fixed scrolling in the file name field when creating a new file on Dropbox.
  • Miscellaneous other little fixes all over.

Thank you very much for using Scratch and for your support. We’ve loved all the feedback so far—please keep sending it our way! And, of course, rating and reviewing in the app store is always helpful.

Scratch — Your Quick-Input Notepad

We’ve made loads of apps for clients at Karbon, but this is the first app we’ve made for ourselves. I’m excited to announce the immediate availability of Scratch. We hope it will become your favorite quick-input notepad. It’s crammed full of features like customizable and Markdown toolbars, Dropbox support for appending to existing files or creating new ones, built-in sharing to Twitter and more. It launches lightning-fast, too, and it always jumps right into edit mode so you can start typing right away.

The great thing is Scratch allows you to quickly clear your existing note, but stores all cleared notes in a searchable history so you never have to worry about losing anything. There’s no silly file management to deal with.

Give it a try, we think you’ll like it.

New Design, You’d Better Like It!

Finally had a chance to put the finishing touches on a new design for this site. I’ve been thinking about this new design for about four months, and working on the actual code on and off for the past two weeks. The last time I redesigned was in April of 2010—nearly a year and a half ago. For me, that’s a personal record (I’ve redesigned this site 20 times in the past 6 years alone).

The focus this time around was:

  1. Simplicity. I wanted to remove all the clutter from the sidebar (and the sidebar itself), the footer, et cetera. I narrowed down all important actions and stuck them in one place. The links I felt were most useful will stick with you as you scroll.
  2. Photos. I take a lot of pictures and the default 500px width Tumblr uses is not great for showing them off. Luckily, their high resolution functionality and some CSS allows me to make them huge now. Love it.
  3. New text styling. I based this off iA Writer, which I love to death (and am using to write this post). The way iA Writer displays text with Markdown is terrific, so I mimicked some of that here. Bold text is a good example. Quotes, lists, headers—they’re all designed to look more like text in Markdown format.

A completely new thing for me: I based this design on a theme. I purchased the HIGH RES Theme by JSTN and used that as a base to customize and design on. I’ve been coveting the HIGH RES theme for months now and it was a lot of fun to make it my own.

In addition, I accidentally and shamelessly took Will’s idea for a rounded-avatar header. He claims he has forgiven me, but I’m not so sure.

Ego for iPad, Now 40% Cheaper

Ego for iPad, Now 40% Cheaper

A new version of Ego for iPad (1.0.6) is now available in the App Store. This version adds support for multi-tasking in iOS 4.2 and also solves a small number of bugs with third-party services.

In addition, I’ve lowered the price of Ego for iPad by 40%. This isn’t a sale, it’s a permanent change. The app is more affordable than ever—now you can have Ego on both your iPhone/iPod Touch and your iPad for a total of less than five bucks. With support for eight different services, that’s a steal.

Ego 2.1.4 Now Available

I’m thrilled to announce a new version of Ego with all-new high resolution images for iPhone 4 is now available. In addition to graphics for the Retina display, this version of Ego contains the following fixes:

  • Tumblr users with + in their email can now create widgets
  • Fixed Squarespace widget issues
  • Miscellaneous minor bug fixes

A new version of Ego for iPad was also released containing the above fixes, as well as a fix for Vimeo auto-login and better swiping detection. Go get ‘em!

Announcing Ego for iPad

I’m thrilled to announce Ego for iPad, now available in the App Store. This new version of Ego includes support for Tumblr, a system status notifier (so I can send messages about 3rd-party issues), and, best of all, a detail view which allows you to swipe right on a widget and automatically log into that site to view even more of your stats. Respond to mentions on Twitter, dig into your referrals in Mint and Google Analytics, browse your Tumblr dashboard—all from Ego!

Seth Clifford summed up my thoughts on Ego for iPad yesterday in a Twitter post: “Ego on iPhone was very cool. Ego on iPad feels fully realized.”

A new version of Ego for iPhone which adds Tumblr support and other features is in review with Apple and will hopefully be released soon.

Ego version 1.6

I’m pleased to announce version 1.6 of Ego is now available (iTunes link). This update includes a new widget type: Vimeo!

Vimeo is one of my favorite services. We use it for our sketch show, our short films—pretty much every bit of video we put online. Now I can track our plays, likes and comments, as well as subscribers right inside Ego.

Go get it already why don’t you?
