Every year since 2000, the Dev Shed Forums have been the first to wish me a happy birthday each May 15th. I keep meaning to close that old account but I’ve come to appreciate the familiar, cordial message at exactly 12:00AM on 5/15 every year. They’ve been wishing me a happy birthday before everyone else—including my own mother—for over a decade.

Some of this is also generational. You know, Malia and Sasha, they have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents. And Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them, and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.
Years from now, when the next generation looks back on this period during which the United States spent so much time arguing about gay rights, they’ll be ashamed of us and how long it took for us to do the right thing as a nation. It took Obama nearly four years to announce his support of gay marriage, but at least he had the guts to finally do it.
